In a technical sense, an “Online or Distance Learning Program” is either an “Online Certificate” or “Online Diploma”. In a looser sense it can refer to any online course or degree.

An Online Program is below degree level, and is of particular use for those people who want an introduction to the basics of a subject area before progressing to higher levels, such as a bachelor’s degree.

The most basic online program is an Online Certificate followed by an Online Diploma, which provides further detail on a subject area.

Students can enrol on a Diploma course without having to complete a Certificate first. Choosing one over the other is a matter of how deep you want to delve into the subject. This should be determined by your personal goals and your existing knowledge of the subject.

For adult learners returning to learning or for people apprehensive about committing to full degree, an online or distance learning program can be a good point in which to start learning.
