Public health programs examine the practice of managing threats to a community's health. The study of public health emphasises the social context of diseases and health, focussing on improved health through the implementation of measures such as vaccinations to the examination of policies for non-smoking laws.
Public health as an industry aims to improve people's lives by preventing (or treating) diseases. In 1920, C.E.A. Winslow, the Professor of Public Health at Yale University, defined public health as "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals."
