The actual word ‘diploma’ comes from the Greek for a folded paper. This is probably why in the US, the diploma is the physical certification received after graduation. Although in countries such as the UK and Australia, the diploma is a type of academic achievement.

The diploma as an academic award is below a bachelors degree. There is another type of diploma called a postgraduate diploma, which is an award for students who have received a bachelors qualification or higher.
