Cantons, the member states of Switzerland, manage the Swiss education system. The cantons have their own constitutions, courts and governments. They each enjoy a degree of independence, which means that the country’s education system quite diverse.
A change following a referendum in 2006 means that the education system now follows one common program in all the cantons.
Because of its diversity, many private international schools exist in Switzerland.
The first university in Switzerland was founded in 1460 in Basel. There are now twelve universities in Switzerland - ten of which are managed by cantons, and two managed by the Swiss federal state.
