Banking and Finance

Banking

If your studies lead you to a career in banking you will be involved in offering a range of financial services. These could include managing the accounts of individuals or businesses, offering a consultation service, arranging loans, dealing with monetary transactions, collecting deposits and so on. There could also be the opportunity to take employment in an investment bank where you could be involved in the processes of underwriting issues of bonds and stocks plus other related services.

Banking is a process where a bank which is a commercial or government institution offers financial services that include lending money, collection of deposits, issue of currencies and debit cards, transaction processing and so on. Most banks work for profit, however, a few government banks work as non-profit organizations. Central banks function as government agencies and control a country’s interest rates and circulation of money.

Finance

If you develop a career in personal, business or public finance, you will be involved in  managing money and assets, and managing the associated risks.. This will involve processes such as allocating and distributing your organisation’s resources after first identifying and dealing with any related risks.

Finance involves managing money and assets with the aim of earning the best return from them. It includes topics such as providing funds for business, managing the investment in stocks and shares, assessing and managing risk, purchasing assets, managing currency transactions, working with financial tools, analysing business environments to make recommendations on how to manage
funds in the future.

A career in this sector would probably attract you if you are good at mathematics, have well-developed critical thinking, and an ability to analyse financial issues. You probably have a keen interest in economics and a good appreciation of the environmental
factors (e.g. price of oil, government policies) that influence markets.

Career options include: Stock broker, banker, merchant banker, trader (e.g. commodities, currency), finance director, finance officer, underwriter, and personal finance advisor.
